F.D.A. Panel Rejects Philip Morris’ Claim That Tobacco Stick Is Safer Than Cigarettes – The New York Times #tobacco #prosmoke

From SFATA: NASEM REPORT: CONFIRMED RELATIVE BENEFITS AND SAFETY OF E-CIGARETTES, MISSED OPPORTUNITY TO HELP END SMOKING AND SAVE LIVES The Smoke Free Alternatives Trade Association Executive Director, Pamela Gorman today issued the following statement in response to the National Academy of Sciences Report on Public Health Consequences of E-Cigarettes: As American small businesses engaged in the fight against smoking and cancer, we share the goal of improved public health, including age… restrictions and verification, and support a number of the recommendations contained in the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) report. “We are pleased that the report confirmed that use of vapor products is significantly less harmful than smoking, but that is something the scientific community has known for some time now.” “Unfortunately, this report also contains several stale recommendations and represents a missed opportunity to address tobacco harm reduction in a more comprehensive manner. Most notably, it downplays the major impacts on smoking cessation that recent research has documented.” According to CDC data, e-cigarettes are the most popular products in America for smoking cessation, and also have a higher success rate than any other product. The most recent government data shows that smokers who use e-cigarettes are much more likely to be smoke free than those who use FDA approved Nicotine Replacement Therapy products such as the patch and gum or pharmaceutical methods such as varenicline or bupropion. A recent NIH funded study from the University of California San Diego School of Public Health found that e-cigarettes cause more quit attempts and are more successful than NRT products. These authors said: “We found that e-cigarette use was associated with an increased smoking cessation rate at the level of subgroup analysis and at the overall population level. It is remarkable, considering that this is the kind of data pattern that has been predicted but not observed at the population level for cessation medication, such as nicotine replacement therapy and varenicline. E-cigarettes appear to have helped to increase smoking cessation at the population level.” Smoking kills ten times more people each year than opioid deaths, yet the report minimizes the evidence supporting smoking cessation and the potential for saving lives. “Our sector is proud of the significant progress that has been made in reducing smoking and preventing youth use of vapor products. We take seriously the role we have all played in bringing about this positive trend. More work remains, and we stand ready to do that work with those who support proven strategies to combat smoking and allow informed adult consumers to choose less harmful alternatives.”
